Cornflower, also known as Bachelor's Button, is a European wildflower that once grew wild at the edges of grain fields, and it's kept that same easygoing, cottage-garden charm ever since. The flowers are a rich, true blue that's genuinely hard to find elsewhere in the garden, held on tall, wiry stems that sway nicely in a breeze and hold up beautifully in a cut-flower vase. It's an easy hardy annual that rewards very little effort with a long summer of blooms, and pollinators love it as much as gardeners do.

How to grow it
Direct sow in early spring, 3–4 weeks before your last frost. Indoor starting isn't recommended, as cornflower prefers to be sown right where it will grow. Scatter seeds and cover very lightly, about 1/16", and space plants 8 inches apart. Expect sprouts in 5–20 days and flowers about 10 weeks after sowing. Water at a medium, consistent rate.
Cornflower isn't fussy about soil and actually does well in poorer ground. Just work in about 1/2" of compost or a light application of organic granular fertilizer to give it a good start.
