Orius insidiosus for Maximum Thrips Control
Small in size, relentless in appetite. Orius insidiosus, commonly known as the Minute Pirate Bug, is one of the most effective biological control agents available for thrips, targeting every life stage from egg to adult. Equipped with a piercing rostrum, Orius immobilizes and feeds on prey significantly larger than itself, making it a standout generalist predator for gardens, greenhouses, orchards, and indoor growing operations dealing with persistent thrips infestations.
What Is Orius insidiosus?
Orius insidiosus is a true bug, a member of the family Anthocoridae, distinguished by its long rostrum, which it uses to pierce and feed on prey. As a generalist predator, it targets a broad range of pest species across all life stages, with a particular strength against thrips that makes it a cornerstone of many IPM programs where thrips pressure is high.
What Pests Does Orius Control?
Primary target:
- Thrips (eggs, nymphs, and adults)
Secondary targets:
- Spider Mites
- Aphids
- Moth Eggs
- Many other soft-bodied pest species and mites
How Orius Works
Orius is a fast-establishing, broad-spectrum predator with a life cycle optimized for rapid population buildup:
- Egg laying: Adult females lay up to 45 eggs over their lifespan, deposited directly in plant tissue near pest populations
- Hatch (Days 5–7): Nymphs hatch and immediately begin feeding on prey
- Nymph stage (~2 weeks): Hungry, active nymphs feed aggressively throughout development
- Adult stage (~4 weeks): Predatory adults continue hunting for approximately 4 weeks
- Total lifespan: Approximately 7 weeks from hatch to end of adult stage
- Full life cycle: Optimally completed within a month under favorable conditions
A Note on Diapause
Orius can enter diapause — a temporary pause in development — under unfavorable conditions, particularly short day length or low temperatures. To keep Orius active and progressing through its life cycle:
- Maintain temperatures above 73°F, or
- Keep temperatures above 50°F with appropriate supplemental lighting to simulate longer day length
This is especially important for greenhouse and indoor grow operations during winter months or in low-light environments.
Application Instructions
Where to Use
Orius can be used indoors, outdoors, or wherever pests are present, including gardens, greenhouses, indoor grows, orchards, vineyards, interiorscapes, and more.
When to Apply
Introduce multiple times throughout the growing season to stay ahead of the pest life cycle. Early, consistent releases are more effective than a single large release after infestation is established.
How to Apply
- Apply indoors at any time; apply outdoors in the morning, evening, or on a cloudy day.
- Avoid direct sunlight during introduction.
- Disperse directly onto infested plants.
- Leave the open container in place for 24 hours to allow any remaining insects to disperse into the canopy.

Storage
Introduce immediately upon receipt for best results. If storage is necessary:
- Store at 45–55°F for no longer than 24 hours
- Keep out of direct sunlight
- Do not freeze
Pro Tips
- Introduce at the first sign of thrips. Orius is most effective when deployed early, before thrips populations establish. Multiple releases throughout the season consistently outperform single large releases.
- Prevent diapause in low-light or cool environments by maintaining temperatures above 73°F or supplementing with grow lighting. A dormant Orius population provides no pest control.
- Support Orius populations between releases with our Good Bug Supplemental Diet, a highly nutritional food source rich in proteins, lipids, and essential fatty acids. (Contains shellfish — allergy disclaimer)
- For layered thrips control, pair Orius with SF Beneficial Nematodes to target thrips pupae in the soil while Orius handles above-ground life stages.
- Avoid applying alongside broad-spectrum or systemic insecticides, which are harmful to Orius at all life stages.
