Praying Mantis Egg Cases

$11.62 $15.49

Praying Mantis egg cases (oothecae) are a natural, broad-spectrum biological pest control solution for gardens, greenhouses, and grow rooms. Each egg case contains 50–200 eggs that hatch into nymphs ready to hunt crickets, grasshoppers, caterpillars, aphids, moths, beetles, flies, mealybugs, leafhoppers, and many other pest insects. Hatch indoors or outdoors; nymphs disperse naturally and establish in your garden. IPM compatible. Safe for people, pets, and edible plants.

Few garden allies are as captivating, or as effective, as the praying mantis. A skilled ambush predator, the mantis uses natural camouflage to blend seamlessly into its environment before striking with precision. A single egg case can release up to 200 hungry nymphs, each immediately ready to target a wide range of pest insects. Whether you're managing an active pest problem or building a resilient garden ecosystem, praying mantis egg cases offer a natural, self-sustaining solution.

What Are Praying Mantis?

Praying mantises are carnivorous generalist predators, widely used in integrated pest management programs for their ability to target a broad range of pest insects. As nymphs and adults, they actively hunt and ambush prey, making them effective across gardens, greenhouses, and outdoor growing spaces.

Each egg case (ootheca) contains 50–200 eggs. Once conditions are right, nymphs hatch and disperse quickly, seeking out prey and establishing themselves throughout your growing space. Adults can live several months to a year, depending on conditions.

How Praying Mantis Egg Cases Work

Female mantises lay egg cases (oothecae) containing 50–200 eggs each, surrounded by a protective foam casing. Hatching takes 2–6 weeks when kept at 70–80°F, and up to 12 weeks in cooler conditions. Once hatched, nymphs emerge and disperse within an hour, immediately seeking out prey. As they grow into adults, they continue hunting and can live for several months to a year.

Note: The egg case does not visibly change shape or form during or after hatching, so you may not notice the hatch event itself; you'll simply start seeing young mantises in your garden as they grow.

Application Instructions

Indoor Hatching

  1. Place the egg case in a warm area out of direct sunlight.
  2. Wait up to 6 weeks for hatching at 70–80°F.
  3. Once hatched, introduce nymphs outdoors within 24 hours.
  4. Place directly on plants, under cover where possible, to protect young nymphs from predators.

Outdoor Hatching

  1. Place the egg case in the crotch of a plant or hang it with a string approximately 1–2 feet off the ground in the canopy of a tree or shrub.
  2. Wait up to 6 weeks for hatching at 70–80°F.
  3. Once hatched, nymphs will emerge and disperse naturally within an hour.

Pro Tips

  • Keep egg cases at 70°F or above to encourage hatching. Cooler temperatures slow the process; use this to your advantage if you want to time your release.
  • Hatching can take up to 12 weeks. Be patient and keep conditions consistent.
  • Praying mantis coexist peacefully alongside ladybugs and other beneficial insects, making them a great addition to a diverse garden ecosystem.
  • For broad-spectrum pest control, pair with complementary biological control agents suited to your specific pest pressure.
  • Avoid applying broad-spectrum or systemic insecticides alongside mantis releases; these are harmful to nymphs and adults.
