Heartsease Violet (Johnny Jump-Up) -ย Viola tricolor

Grown in Williams, Oregon by Strictly Medicinal Seeds

Johnny Jump-Up has been charming gardeners for so long it's earned a dozen names: Heartsease, Wild Pansy, Johnny Jump-Up. The purple, yellow, and white flowers look like they're smiling. The plants are small, staying under a foot tall while spreading readily once they settle in. They do especially well when planted in areas shaded from the summer sun like meadow edges, beneath trees, or tucked along a garden border.

Technically a biennial, it can also be a short-lived perennial, but is usually grown as a spring annual. It self-sows so easily that once you plant it, they will regrow from new seeds each spring and fall. You'll likely find volunteers popping up in new corners of the garden for years to come.

How to grow it

Direct sow in spring or fall, covering seeds with about 1/8" of soil. They need darkness to germinate, so don't leave them exposed. Space plants 8 inches apart and keep soil consistently moist. This one doesn't like to dry out.

Starting indoors also works well. Sow in late winter and keep temperatures at 65โ€“75ยฐF until ready to transplant. Expect sprouts in 7โ€“21 days.

Johnny Jump-Up looks lovely in containers, tucked throughout garden beds, or lining a border. Just give it some relief from the hot summer sun.
