The Nest Egg Gourd is true to its name, strongly resembling a goose egg or hen's egg. These white, oblong, small gourds were traditionally used to place in the nest to trick hens. Will grow up to 2.5 inches in diameter. Sow 5 seeds evenly spaced in hills, 8 inches high and 12 inches across. young vines should have a fence, trellis, or heavy cord on which to climb. When young vines are about 8 inches, thin to 3 plants per hill. Does not transplant well. To dry gourds, wait until the fruit is fully developed and hard enough to pick from the vines. Pick before frost. To preserve, avoid brushing and wash thoroughly. Store in a dry, well-ventilated place until thoroughly dried out and hard. Can then be waxed or painted.
